Our Home on Wheels

We were parked in Lee, Maine

For 6 1/2 years this was our full-time home. From mid 1985 through 1992 we criss-crossed the United States in our 35 foot Prairie Schooner powered by a 1980 Chevrolet dually. Kathy worked all over the U.S. as a Flying Nurse. I was retired and my primary job was truck driver. Since Kathy usually worked three 12 hour shifts per week, we had ample time for the touristy things. We saw much of the country from coast to coast and had a lot of fun. We "followed the sun" and didn't have to deal with hot or cold weather for all those years. (This picture brings back many fond memories.)

You were very lucky to experience these sights together. I am sure your wife had many tales to tell in her field. Working like that takes a lot of guts, not knowing the layout of the hospitals, staff, style of care, one she gets comfortable, off to the next. Wow. She must have been an outstanding nurse! @Denise: Thanks Denise. It was Kathy's idea to take up the "vagabond" life initially... a decision neither of us ever regretted. And yes, she was an outstanding nurse... a patients nurse. The change of venue never bothered her, in fact, she welcomed the constant change. It seems even in the nursing profession there is "office politics" and she liked it that she didn't have to become part of that. Also, no matter how bad such may be in a location she knew she could "kiss them goodbye" in 13 weeks. She always looked forward to the new job... literally "down the road".

@grant: Thanks Grant! In many ways our entire life together stretched the concept of conventionality. Kept it interesting more often than not. But we were surprised to find, at that time, that more than a few people were living the same semi-vagabond life we did. I doubt that many could afford the lifestyle now considering fuel costs etc.
